Light bulb moment….. (?)

This will be our first virtual planning session; we are really embracing our new technologies skills. This way it can be opened up to anyone who wants to comment or anyone who wants to just listen in.

So I had an idea and it was oddly even before the snow started….

Living in Britain it is quite common to wake up and the second thing out of our mouths after “Morning darling” is “What’s the weather like?” It is something that everyone takes an interest in, from a passing observation to a life’s work. It affects what we do as well as how we feel. The learning on this subject is endless. It is constant and ever changing.

So I would like to give the children the opportunity to get interested in the weather, record it, predict it and enjoy it. This theme has huge potential for growth. It is scientific, analytical, social and emotional.

I envisage a weather station in the outdoor space, a group of resources that the children can use. These resources could be used for organised activities as well as free choice play. We could have crystals to check for sunlight reflections, wind socks/mills to check wind direction and strength. Cloud catcher nets and rainfall measurers. This collection of resources can be added to over time and different parts will be used more at different times of the year. There are so many activities that could spring from this, scientific experiments/measurements, wind power/ solar power, seasons, flora and fauna.

The children can give feedback on their discoveries, they could pretend to be a weather man/girl and present their forecast. It could even become part of the daily routine.

Christine and Anne-Marie can you tell what weather related things you already do? Are you happy for me to develop this idea?

    Our Reception team have had a good discussion about your ideas Sarah.We all agree that they fit in with our ideas beautifully. As you know, we are particularly looking to develop our themes of work into the outdoor space so this ticks all the boxes for us there. It is also good that your ideas would encompass the scope to enhance all areas of development. [PSED, CLL,MD, KUW, CD, PD]

    Seasons and weather is a theme we carry on throughout the year. We have tried to collate some of the weather related things we already do.
    Currently, each morning, the children report on the weather coming to school and select the representative picture card for the weather chart. This is reported on and updated daily.
    We look at each season in turn and the change from one to another. We go outside in all weathers to experience and discuss it [jumping in puddles, playing with leaves or in the snow, kites in the wind etc……..]

    As to some specific activities -here are a few of the sorts of activities we have done.
    – Made mobiles out of CD’s [and metal spoons] to reflect the sun.
    – Made wind chimes and kites and flyers with tails attached to trees to show wind direction and strength.

    Your ideas look great and will develop all this further. It will put all the ideas together in one station and make it accessible to the children. Hopefully it will then encourage them to spark off and develop further ideas of their own.

    One further thought – could we think about taking it one step further to include sustainable/ecological ideas…….harnessing wind power and solar power????????? -any thoughts!

    Ian – I looked at the wellington sculptures. I love the way it is more than a piece of art but encompasses the local history and keps it alive in a relevant form.
    The umbrella painting is an exciting idea. I have tried it a few times and the big lesson I learned was to use fabric paint or waterproof acrylic paint and perhaps spray with scotchguard or equivalent.
    The idea reminded me of the hanging parasols at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas I saw last year. I have some lovely photographs of them from different angles. – something similar hanging from our the roof of our undercover area????????? -just a passing thought. You know how one idea sparks off something else…….but isn’t that the point of joint planning………

    If it is alright with Sarah I would like to borrow her idea of an interactive discovery cabinet as a permanent resource. I would enjoy making it and the contents can always be changed and added to over time.
    Putting a fresh object in now and again will keep it alive for the children and it would be good if they brought things in each week – it could be anything from a dead beetle to a postcard from auntie Mavis.
